In ABZÛ you play as the Diver. The Diver is one of the main characters of the lore of ABZÛ.

Little is known about the Diver apart for the fact she was created by the same technology-based "species" that created the Great Harvester and the Harvesters. A universal trait among both the Great Harvester, the Harvesters and the Diver is a vibrant red core. This core allows the Diver to both absorb and channel ocean energy, much like the Great Harvester and to a lesser extent the regular Harvesters. Numerous theories have been produced to explain the Diver's mysterious origins, such that she may have had the ability to control the Great Harvester, or that she is a Rythulian like the Traveller in the 2012 game Journey.

The Diver has the power to use the blue energy or "power of the ocean" to restore life to certain parts of the ocean where the ecosystem has subsided. In order to do this, the Diver uses the portal-like pedestals in the abandoned areas. When using the life pool the Diver enters a sort of alternate world and is able to activate one of four pedestals in order to begin the life restoration process. The Diver's other abilities include the following:

- Golden Boosting: Swimming forward and doing a roll (Press X on PS4 thrice in rhythm) creates a golden boost.
- Communication: The pulse that emanates from the Diver's head (Press Square on PS4) allows it to communicate with drones and interact with fish to a certain degree.
- Boost: Not as powerful as the Golden Boost, but a faster variant of regular swimming (Press X on PS4).

- Repairing: The Diver can bring dead, broken or trapped drones back online to serve and aid the Diver (Press Square on PS4 while looking at a drone.)
- Meditation: The ability to examine the environment in areas that contain a working ecosystem. (Interact with a shark statue or go to the menu and click the "Meditate" option).

- While the Diver's gender was never revealed in-game and intentionally left ambiguous, ABZU's developers have referred to the Diver countless times as a female.
- Due to numerous similarities and the Great White Shark appearing in Giant Squid's 2021 game The Pathless, it is highly likely that the two games exist in the same universe.
- This could potentially mean the Diver's awakening was caused by events from The Pathless.
